Heaton Lookout, Watagans, NSW, Australia

The Heaton lookout is right beside the Watagan Forest Road, tho "Track" might describe it reasonably well. But it does have great views, and most any 2wd car can make it up to here.

The first time I had come past this lookout was in December, 1984, at the end of a 10 day solo walk from Hallidays Point, almost 150 km (ATCF - as the crow flies) away.
This also happens to be a 'staging place' for the Great North Walk, tho NO camping is allowed at the Lookout. There are picnic tables, and a BBQ here.
While there are many roads in the Watagan State Forest, if you are wanting to go from the south (eg, Martinsville or Morisset) to the north (eg, Mulbring or Quorrobolong) then your journey will take you past this special spot.
From the Watagan State Forest Website for the lookout: (
visit link) "Heaton Lookout is named after Richard Heaton, an English convict who became a timber cutter in the area."
Incidentally, the last time I was here (back in August 2015 there was an overturned vehicle just 100 m to the south, where the driver who was unfamiliar with the dirt road, spun out of control on the dirt/gravel road, ending up on his roof, right in the middle of the one lane track.
We tried unsuccessfully to right it with the one pulley and rope that I had. And it took a 4wd with a cable and winch to get it back over, so it could be towed. So, PLEASE take car on the blind corners!
