During the heyday of the Old Spanish Trail, when the US 290 passed through Chef Field and was the only route between San Antonio and El Paso. Enough travelers came through tiny Sheffield to support several automotive-related businesses.
Sheffield saw the handwriting on the wall when the proposed I-10 route was published in the 1970s, in the town learned it was being bypassed to the north. The completion of the I-10 in 1987 took all the car traffic that formerly passed through Sheffield and routed it away from town, where the fat wallets of travelers zoomed by 80 miles an hour, with nothing to draw those folks into town to spend money.
If this waymarked old garage was still operating in 1987, it probably didn't operate for long.
The Old Spanish Trail supported businesses that provided good livings for people in Sheffield for a lot of years. The end of the OST and its by-passing by the I-10 insured economic decline and population loss for this remote community.
