When we first saw this beautiful tombstone, we thought that it was for a woman or a child. We were surprised to see that it was for a man who is almost 40 years old.
Nevertheless the beautifully carved details and the relief hand of a wife dropping arose on the grave of her husband strikes us as being so very sad, even as we appreciate the beauty of the relief carving, and the deep grimness of the epitaph.
The tombstone reads as follows:
[relief of a woman's hand dropping a rose]
JOHN ASHFORD WHITE
Born August 4, 1855.
Died January 1, 1892.
Husband dear to thy rest.
The summer flowers will bloom
While you, the purest and best
Doth wither in the tomb."
