Ernie Davis was a star athlete at Syracuse University from 1959 to 1961. He was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1961, emblematic of the most outstanding player in US College football. In doing so, he became the first black athlete to ever be awarded the honour.
He was the first player drafted by the Washington Redskins in the 1962 NFL draft, then traded immediately to the Cleveland Browns. He was seemingly destined for professional greatness.
Tragically, he was diagnosed with leukemia in 1962, and died in 1963, having never played a down of professional football.
The statue is a lifesize bronze of Davis in his number 44 football uniform, standing atop a white granite block. The piece is by sculptor Bruno Lucchesi. It was dedicated in 2008. It is located between the Carrier Dome and the university quad.
