Designed by Tom Morris in 1877, the golf course at Arbroath lies on a narrow strip of ground between the railway line with the dune ridge beyond, and the arable farmland inland. As was traditional on old seaside courses, the outward holes run away in a straight line to the furthest point from the clubhouse, in this case the opening seven holes, which head south-westerly into the prevailing wind with a fence all the way down the right hand side. At the 8th tee the course heads back, most of the holes heading north-easterly with the exception of the 11th, 12th and 16th holes. The 8th and 13th have the Aberdeen to Dundee railway line hard up against the right side of their fairways. Three small burns or streams cross the course which apart from the odd plantation of a few pine trees is completely open to the elements, especially the wind whipping in off the sea which lies only yards beyond the railway tracks. The course is relatively flat, with only small undulations usually associated with links golf.
