Large bell, cast in 1912 by the Meneely & Company of West Troy, NY. It replaced the bell that had hung in the old tower behind the Fire Department. That bell was lost in a fire in 1898.
This bell was originally in the Episcopal Church in Middleport. The Church leased use of the bell as a fire warning alarm for the princely sum of $25/year.
In 1952, the bell was moved from the church to its present location, and dedicated on Memorial Day as a memorial to all deceased members of the fire department. It was rededicated on Memorial Day 2016.
The affixed marker reads:
1952
Dedicated to the memory of the deceased
VOLUNTEER FIREMEN OF MIDDLEPORT
Who, at the sound of the alarm,
Unselfishly and devotedly
Gave their service and time
To protect the lives and property
Of their neighbors.
Well done, good and faithful servants.
