Description:
Sinclair Lewis was born in Sauk Centre, Minnesota, the son of a country doctor. The younger Lewis studied at Oberlin Academy and Yale University. After graduation, he worked as an editor until he was able to make a living as a freelance short story writer. Lewis's first book was a children's story, published under a pseudonym, about an airplane. The first novel which brought him attention was 1920's "Main Street," nominated for the Pulitzer Prize for literature. Lewis was awarded the Pulitzer in 1926 for "Arrowsmith," but he turned it down. Other of Lewis's notable novels include "Babbitt," "Elmer Gantry," and "It Can't Happen Here." Lewis was the first American to be honored with the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 1930. He died in Rome.
