McDonald's #1 Store Museum is a recreation of the first McDonald's restaurant opened by Ray Kroc, McDonald's Corporation founder, in Des Plaines, IL, in 1955. The original restaurant went through several remodels through the years and was finally torn down in 1984. The present building was built to original blueprints. The "Speedee" sign is original.
This museum is open to the public from Memorial Day through Labor Day from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. according to a sign near the entrance. See this same listing under the "History Museum" category for more information.
Personal information:
I grew up in Des Plaines. I was only 6 years old in 1955 but a bit later I remember some adults giving their opinion that it is "just a passing fad". So much for that thought! Later, when I was in college, during a couple of summers, I was a substitute mail carrier for the Post Office. Often, I would get the route that included this restaurant (at the time it was still an operating restaurant) and I would stop in to have a Coke or if at lunch time, probably something to eat.
