"Years in the making, the new 100,000 square foot fitness center incorporates all elements of a full-fledged fitness program into a single facility in a centralized location. It includes more than 18,000-square-feet of strength training and cardio floor area, three group exercise rooms, a cycling studio, two basketball courts, two racquetball courts, a family fitness room, and a 50-meter indoor pool.
This project dates back to a 1985 program when the helicopter squadrons were established at Mayport, according to Public Works Officer, Cmdr. Phillip LaVallee. Because of the squadrons, the naval station was required to have an indoor training pool for search and rescue qualification requirements.
Over the next 28 years, the scope of the project grew to include renovating the existing gym and adding additional square footage of fitness space.
The fitness center will support Navy training requirements and offer multiple opportunities for self-directed and group led physical fitness options for its entire patron base.
The fitness center’s facility spaces were designed to serve multiple purposes, and include systems that extend the building’s service life far beyond traditional projects."
