A caryatid is a female statue supporting an entablature on her head thus replacing a column or pillar. The masculine version is called Atlante. The atlantes of Pierre Puget are supporting the balcony of the Town Hall of Honor of the city of Toulon.
Pierre Puget, sculptor from Marseille, created his Atlantes (in stone of Calissanne) in 1655. They represent strength and fatigue. Their gestures are those of men carrying burdens.
