[DE] Mittelalterliches Tympanon findet Platz in der Stadtmauer
900-jähriges Kulturdenkmal mit bewegter Geschichte
12. Jahrhundert, 2,4 Meter lang, 1,3 Meter hoch – so die Eckdaten des Tympanons aus weißem Kalkstein, dass im April 1966 neben dem Hexenturm am Salhofplatz in die Stadtmauer eingelassen wurde.
Es handelt sich dabei um die ehemalige Türbogenfüllung der romanischen Martinuskirche. Als Krönung des Westportals mahnte die als Flachrelief gearbeitete Skulptur rund fünfhundert Jahre lang die Kirchenbesucher zur Andacht. Für das Alter sprechen die strenge Gliederung und der aufgelockerte Faltenwurf der Kleidung. Mehrere in flachem Relief hervortretende Personen sind dargestellt: Christus als Weltenrichter, ist auf einem von Säulchen getragenen Thron von vier Heiligen umgeben, darunter vermutlich Maria Muttergottes und Maria Magdalena. An beiden Enden sind die uns heute unbekannten Stifter als kleinere Gestalten kniend und betend dargestellt. Links und rechts über Christus schweben zwei Engel.
Bis 1770 war das Tympanon am Hauptportal der romanischen Kirche angebracht. Beim Umbau des Gotteshauses in barockem Stil wurde es ausgebaut und gegenüber in die Friedhofsmauer eingepasst. Dort war es den Wettereinflüssen ungeschützt ausgesetzt, weshalb es fast bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verwittert ist. 1914 siedelte es ins Bodewigmuseum um, wo es im Treppenhaus Platz fand. Als das städtische Museum zum Kriegsende geschlossen und die Exponate auf der Festung Ehrenbreitstein ausgelagert wurden, musste auch das Tympanon die Reise nach Koblenz antreten und war dort im Mittelrhein-Museum ausgestellt.
Im Zuge der Renovierung des Hexenturms und seiner Nutzung als Museum für die zurückgekehrten Exponate der Vor- und Frühgeschichte und des Mittelalters, entschloss man sich 1965 das Tympanon in die tiefen Bogennischen am Salhofplatz einzumauern. Seit 1979 steht die Skulptur offiziell unter Denkmalschutz, weil sie Zeugnis insbesondere über das geistige, künstlerische und handwerkliche Schaffen ihrer Entstehungszeit ablegt.

900-year-old cultural monument with moving history
12th century, 2.4 meters long, 1.3 meters high - this is the basic data of the tympanum made of white limestone, which was added to the city wall in April 1966 next to the Hexenturm at Salhofplatz.
This is the former door arch of the Romanesque Martinus church. As a coronation of the western portal, the sculpture, designed as a flat relief, commemorated church visitors for five hundred years. For the age, the strict outline and the relaxed drapery of the clothes speak. Several persons, standing in a flat relief, are depicted: Christ as a world judge, is surrounded on a collegiate throne of four saints, among them presumably Maria Muttergottes and Maria Magdalena. At both ends the founders, who are unknown to us today, are depicted as kneeling and praying. On the left and right above Christ are two angels.
Until 1770, the tympanum was attached to the main portal of the Romanesque church. During the conversion of the Gotteshaus in baroque style, it was expanded and fitted into the cemetery wall. There it was exposed to the weather unprotected, which is why it is weathered almost unrecognizable. In 1914 it moved to the Bodewigmuseum, where it was located in the stairwell. When the municipal museum was closed down to the end of the war and the exhibits were placed on the fortress of Ehrenbreitstein, the tympanum also had to travel to Koblenz, where it was exhibited in the Middle Rhine Museum.
In the course of the renovation of the Hexenturm and its use as a museum for the returned exhibits of prehistory and early medieval times, the tympanum was decided in 1965 to sink into the deep archipelago at Salhofplatz. Since 1979 the sculpture has officially been declared a protected monument because it bears witness to the intellectual, artistic and craftsmanship of its period of creation.
