Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church was founded in 1866 by Charles S. Schaeffer who was a white agent of the Freedmen’s Bureau and an ordained Baptist Minister. Captain Schaeffer also founded the Christiansburg Industrial Institute in 1873, which was place to educate freed slaves. Booker T. Washington served as an adviser to the Institute in 1896. Booker T. Washington became adviser to the school in 1896. The current church building was completed in 1885 and originally known as the Christiansburg African Baptist Church. Following Captain Schaeffer’s death in 1899, the church changed its name to Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church. This historic church sits on a hill overlooking Christiansburg, next to the old Christiansburg Industrial Institute which closed in 1966. The Schaeffer Memorial Baptist Church is still home to a very active congregation.
