Die Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn ist eine der größten und traditionsreichsten Universitäten in Deutschland. Im Sommersemester 2016 waren etwa 35.600 Studenten immatrikuliert. Gelehrt werden u.a. Fächer aus den Fakultäten der evangelischen und katholischen Theologie, der landwirtschaftlichen Fakultät, der mathematisch-naturwissenschaftlichen Fakultät, der Medizin, Philisophie und Jura.

Das heutige Universitätshauptgebäude stammt ursprünglich aus dem Jahre 1697 und war das Kurfürstliche Schloß des Kurfürsten Joseph Clemens. Es war damals vierflüglig mit bis heute erhaltenem Hofgarten im Rokoko-Stil und wurde durch den Kurfüsten sowie später dessen Nachfolger Clemens August als Residenz genutzt. Im Januar 1777 kam es zu einer verheerenden Brandkatastrophe, bei der weite Teile des Schlosses zerstört wurden. Teile des Schlosses wurden in vereinfachter Form wiederaufgebaut, so wie sie heute zu sehen sind. 1944 wurden im Krieg abermals große Teile zerstört und später wiederaufgebaut.

1818 wurde die Universität Bonn als Nachfolger der Kurkölnischen Akademie Bonn gegründet. Zu diesem Anlass schenkte König Friedrich III. von Preussen das gesamte Schloß einschließlich dem Hofgarten der Universität. So wurde das Kurfürstliche Schloss zum Universitätsgebäude und ist bis heute das sogenannte Universitätshauptgebäude der Uni Bonn, auch wenn inzwischen die Räumlichkeiten für die stetig wachsenden Studierendenzahlen bei weitem nicht mehr ausreichen. Ein Ausbau des Hauptgebäudes war aufgrund der zentralen Lage nicht praktikabel, so dass statt dessen über das Stadtgebiet verteilt neue Standorte der Universität entstanden sind. Die wichtigsten sind:
  • Hauptgebäude: Sprachen, Philosophie, Theologie, Archäologie
  • Poppelsdorf: Mathematik, Physik, Geographie, Biologie, Anatomie, Agrarwissenschaften
  • Juridicum: Jura, BWL
  • Römerlager: Informatik, Pädagogik, Sport
  • Endenich: Astronomie, Chemie, Pharmazie
  • Venusberg: Medizin
Aktuell gibt es Bestrebungen der Universität die Institute wieder mehr zu zentralisieren und errichtet dafür einen neuen, großen Campus in Poppelsdorf.
The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn is one of the largest and most traditional universities of Germany. In summer semester 2016 about 35.600 students were enrolled. Among others, courses from the faculties of evangelic and catholic theology, the agricultural faculty, the mathematical-scientific faculty, medical science, philosophy, and law are held here.

Today's main university building dates back to the year 1697, and was the electoral castle (in German "Kurfürstliches Schloß") of elector Joseph Clemens. Then, it had four wings and a large garden in rococo style, which is preserved until today. It was used as residence by the elector and his successor Clemens August. In January of 1777 a devasting fire destroyed large parts of the castle. Parts of the castle were rebuilt in a simpler form, as it can be seen still today. Again, in 1944 large parts were destroyed by war and later reconstructed.

In 1818, the university of Bonn was founded as successor of the "Kurkölnische Akademie Bonn". On this occasion, King Friedrich III. von Preussen donated the entire castle including the garden to the university. So, the electoral castle became a university building and is still the so-called university main building, even though today the premises are by far not sufficient for the growing number of students. An extension of the main building was not feasible due to the central position. Instead, new sites of the university were established across the town. The most important ones are:
  • Main building: Languages, philosophy, theology, archeology
  • Poppelsdorf: Mathematics, physics, geography, biology, anatomy, agricultural science
  • Juridicum: Law, business studies
  • Römerlager: Computer science, education science, sports
  • Endenich: Astronomy, chemistry, pharmacy
  • Venusberg: Medical science
Currently, the university strives to centralize the institutions more and builds a new, large campus in Poppelsdorf for this reason.
