The "Sydney/Newcastle Freeway" (now Pacific Motorway) was built in the 1960s to avoid the horrendous bends of the Pacific Highway from Berowra to Gosford.

"Planning for the freeway began in 1952, with the aim of providing a high-speed replacement for a section of the Pacific Highway that had been built in 1925–30 which was struggling to cope with the increased traffic."
"April 1963 – Construction began on the 7 km section from the Hawkesbury River to Mount White. This was opened as a toll road in December 1965." (Which I remember, heading to Newcastle at least once a month from Wahroonga)
During this time this trig station would have been frequently used to make sure that the alignment of the Freeway/Tollway was correct, and not impinging on ecologically sensitive areas.
The steel trig station is now within the Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park, just off of the Pacific Motorway.
