Im 14. Jahrhunder stand auf dem Gelände des heutigen Schlosses bereits ein gräfliches Haus, welches jedoch von Bernhard VIII. zur Lippe zerstört wurde. Daraufhin ließen Graf Johann III. und Gräfin Sabina Katharina von Rietberg und Ostfriesland das Schloss im Stile der Renaissance errichten. Bis zur 2. Hälfte des 17. Jahrhunderts erfuhr das Schloss bauliche Veränderungen bis zu dessen heutiger Form.
Das Schloss befindet sich im Privatbesitz (Wohnungen werden vermietet) und ist dadurch nicht öffentlich zugänglich.

ENGLISH:
In the 14th century there was already a house on the site of the present castle, which was destroyed by 'Bernhard VIII. zur Lippe'. After this count Johann III. and countess 'Sabina Katharina von Rietberg und Ostfriesland' build the castle in the Renaissance style. Until the second half of the 17th century the castle experienced structural changes up to its present form.
The castle is in private ownership (apartments are rented) and is not publicly accessible.
