William J. Sahrt moved his furniture/funeral parlor business from Beaver Dam, WI to Sparta, WI and built this building in 1899. He ran the business quite successfully until 1911 when he sold the business to Dean Holloway, Cleve Sutherland, and John C. Meyers. These three gentlemen divided up the business into the Sparta Steam Laundry and an unnamed clothing shop. It is unsure who ran the clothing shop but the laundry was run by Yep Ah Pung. Mr. Pung eventually moved the laundry business across the street while keeping some of the operations in this building. The building remained as a steam laundry until at least 1931. Today the building has side by side taverns.
