Unconformities are gaps in the layer sequencing of rocks. Layers of sedimentary rock lay flat, parallel to the earth's surface. New layers overlie the older layers. An unconformity exists when the normal layering of rock is broken or interrupted.
Disconformities occur in gaps in the succession of rock layers. The older rocks, due to erosion, are missing. The new rock layers form on top of the older rocks, creating a sequencing of parallel rock layers that do not contain all of the expected layers.
