This is one of two cemeteries that was moved to adjoin an existing cemetery named
Matheny. Both cemeteries were moved before the dam was put in to form Kentucky Lake on the Tennessee River.
The Ferguson Springs Cemetery sign says Matheny - Ferguson Springs to indicate that it is now a part of the "Matheny Group" in honor of the cemetery that was already here. Oddly enough, the sign for the Cumberland Cemetery does not say Matheny - Cumberland, but just Cumberland, even though it was moved next to Matheny just like Ferguson Springs was.
At the time of this waymark posting there were 37 recorded graves in the Ferguson Springs cemetery, of which about 1 sixth had missing dates. The oldest recorded grave is from 1845, making it
possibly the oldest cemetery -- considering graves without dates. (Matheny's oldest recorded is 1851, and Cumberland's oldest recorded is 1862.) Whilst the other 2 cemeteries had recent burials -- the same year as this waymark posting -- the most recent burial in the Ferguson Springs Cemetery was in 2010.
