EN: The Weisses Kreuz (white cross) stands on the northern edge of the village square of Simplon next to the church. The three-storey house has a large entrance gate and is covered with slates. Above the main entrance, it is date 1679 in large digits.

Today's apartment house is a former inn. It was used as a stopover for transports via the Simplon pass.

Transit traffic was the foundation and the backbone of the empire of Kaspar von Stockalper, who let expand the pass in 1635 and thus became the richest and most powerful person in the Wallis. From 1670 he was also head of the government.

However, he was overthrown in summer 1678 and had to flee into exile for five years, so that he could not benefit from the completion of the Gasthof Weisses Kreuz.

DE: Das Weisse Kreuz steht am Nordrand des Dorfplatzes von Simplon neben der Kirche. Das dreistöckige Haus hat eine grosse Toreinfahrt und ist mit Schiefertafeln gedeckt. Über dem Haupteingang ist gross das Jahr 1679 eingemeisselt.

Das heutige Wohnhaus ist ein ehemaliger Gasthof. Er wurde als Zwischenstation für die Transporte über den Simplonpass genutzt.

Der Transitverkehr war der Grundstock und das Rückgrat des Imperiums von Kaspar von Stockalper, der ab 1635 den Pass ausbauen liess und damit zum reichsten und mächtigsten Mann des Wallis aufgestiegen war. Ab 1670 war er auch Landeshauptmann.

Allerdings wurde er im Sommer 1678 entmachtet und musste für fünf Jahre ins Exil fliehen, so dass er von der Fertigstellung des Gasthofs Weisses Kreuz nicht mehr profitieren konnte.
