Roadside memorial located on Rice Lake Road just south of Bewdley, ON.
The memorial honours Joseph Scriven, and Irish immigrant to Canada, who is best remembered as the author of the hymn "What A Friend We Have in Jesus".
Scriven spent a large amount of time in the Rice Lake area and in Port Hope. It was there he penned the verses to the hymn. He died in Bewdley in 1886, and is buried in a small family cemetery near Pengelly Bay, on the northern side of Rice Lake.
The memorial, erected near the turn of the 19th century, displays the three verses of the hymn:
What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we often forfeit,
Oh, what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful,
Who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Are we weak and heavy-laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge—
Take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In His arms He’ll take and shield thee,
Thou wilt find a solace there.
The base of the monument bears the inscription:
