In Petersham, at the Harvard Forest's Fisher Museum, is this tree ring from a sequoia tree.

The museum is off Mass. Route 32, south of the intersection with Mass. Route 2 and north of the center of Petersham.

The Fisher Museum is the left part of a brick building, with its own entrance. Check the web site for specific hours it is open. The main part of the museum is a room where more than 20 dioramas originally used as teaching aids to forest management are on display. In a hallway off the main room is this display about the tree section from a sequoia tree. The display is a glass case with a long section of the tree inside, with marks showing either a specific year or relative year intervals. The mark at the far right shows 540 (BC), while the mark on the left shows 1653.

There is a plaque above it with details about the tree. The tree is from a giant sequoia (Sequoiadendron giganteum) containing a total of 2193 annual rings from 540 BC to 1653 AD. The rest of the display was lost due to fire and decay (so the tree lived even longer). The ring samples were studied by Harvard Forest researchers for differences in ring widths and fire scars to reconstruct regional drought and fire events. The scientists can also compare the ring widths on this tree with other trees in the Harvard Forest.
