Long Description:David William Stanley Ogilvy, 1856-1900, the 9th Earl of Airlie, was a soldier who fought in many campaigns in the 19th century, including the Afghan War and in Africa. He was fatally wounded in the Battle of Diamond Hill, near Pretoria, South Africa in the Boer War in 1900.
This tower was erected the following year on the summit of the 1269 foot Tulloch Hill on the Airlie Estate, three miles north of Kirriemuir. Using stone from the Herdhill Quarry near the town, the tower was designed to resemble a tower on the Earl`s home at Airlie Castle.
The hill stands at the foot of the Grampian Mountains and the tower is visible many miles away from Strathmore to the south. The tower is accessed from a car park just off the Glen Prosen road north of Dykehead, where a track snakes through the forest up to the top.
