Anchor from the
"PHIL SCHECKEL"
A steamboat which was run
on the Chippewa River for many
years during the last half
of the 19th century.
Captain Scheckel was perhaps
the best known pilot that ever
put his hand to a wheel of a
Chippewa River steamboat.
After more than 2 decades moving passengers and lumber along the Chippewa, the boat was sold to Henry Flagler, who was planning a railroad to connect the Florida Keys. The boat was used to help build the many railroad bridges, which later became the foundation for most of the highway bridges there.
