A rather grim display of torture and punishment items and devices are on display on the top floor of the White Tower of the Tower of London.
An interpretive sign for the Leg Shackles reads as follows:
"Placed around a prisoner's legs and then hammered shut, the weight of the shackles' 6.35kg (14lbs) restricted movement. They also made escape difficult, since a blacksmith was needed to remove them.
Probably British, Old Tower collection."
