In 1876 George Hoffman moved to Sparta and started learning the butcher trade from O.D. Stevens. Later he would associate with his brother William and they would purchase the William Potter butcher shop on Water Street. In 1888 they moved to the building next door to this one and advertised across the street from the American House Hotel. They also claimed to have a superior ice box for preserving meats in warm weather. In 1890 they built the new home for Hoffman Brothers butcher shop and move in once it was ready. It remained Hoffman Brothers butcher shop through at least 1904 with the Hoffman family living upstairs. In 1916 the butcher shop change owners to J.F. Hollenbeck (who also lived upstairs) and Dell Streeter. The place remained a meat market up until at least 1922. The building itself remained in the Hoffman family into the 1930's. The Italianate style building is considered to have one of the best preserved original store fronts in the Water Street Commercial Historic District. The ornamentation on the building itself is amazing for its age. Today the store front is for rent and the upstairs is used for apartments.
