The rock of St.Skeoch or St.Skae is better known as Elephant Rock. It lies on the North Sea coast, three miles south of Montrose at Boddin. The hard volcanic rock has been eroded by the sea here to create such an arch that resembles an elephant`s head and trunk. At high tide the elephant looks as if it`s dipped its trunk into the water. The feature can be seen from the coastal path, reached either from the cottages at Boddin, or more easily from the track leading to the old cemetery, (co-ordinates for parking on verge are below). The rock can be reached at low tide by a faint path which goes down the cliff from the cemetery, but care is required, especially in wet conditions, trekking poles would be a help.
