Massasoit, a sachem (war chief) of the Wampanoags, formed important political and personal ties with the Pilgrims who first came to Plymouth in 1620. Massasoit is credited with helping the Pilgrims during the first several harsh winters that they experienced in the New World, likely preventing the Colony from complete failure.
This historic bronze statue by Cyrus Dallin stands on top of Coles Hill, overlooking Plymouth Harbor and Plymouth Rock. The statue was erected in 1921 by the Improved Order of Red Men in honor of Massasoit.
