L'ancienne prison située non loin de la Cathédrale St Lazare, est visible en partie depuis la cour du Musée Rolin.

"La prison d'Autun fut construite en 1854 sur des plans de l'architecte André Berthier. C'est l'une des premières en France, à adopter le mode de détention cellulaire. Elle le combine avec un plan circulaire. On trouve au centre un espace cylindrique où s'élevait la chapelle (aujourd'hui disparue), l'ensemble étant surmonté d'une coupole de verre. Les cellules rayonnent sur trois niveaux et permettent une surveillance aisée. Devant la prison, le bâtiment rectangulaire contenait le greffe et le logement des gardiens. La prison est désaffectée depuis 1955. A l'heure actuelle, elle est fermée à la visite pour cause de rénovation dans le cadre d'un projet d'agrandissement du musée Rolin." (visit link)
