Callixylon Whiteanum Stump - Ada, OK - Rock and Mineral Displays on Waymarking.com

On the campus of East Central University stands an 8 ft. petrified stump of a Callixylon Tree from the Devonian Age. This age is part of the Paleozoic Era and dates from 419 to 359 million years ago. The stump was found near Goose Creek, south of the town of Jesse, Oklahoma by Mr. John Fitts, discoverer of the giant Fitts oilfield. This stump is thought to be the largest stump (partly reconstructed) in the world of the primitive Devonian tree Callixylon whiteanum.

Mr. Fitts presented the stump to the University in 1935, in honor of Dr. David White (1862-1935), renowned geologist who was the principal geologist for the United State Geological Survey. He was also the Curator of Paleobotany of the Smithsonian Institute.
