Während der Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig hatte der Galgenberg als flache natürliche Erhebung im Leipziger Stadtgebiet eine hohe Bedeutung. Der Kaiser Napoleon I. hatte hier seinen Befehlsstand bezogen und im Schutze des "Berges" die Gefechtsaufstellung für den 16. Oktober 1813 vorbereitet.
Die Völkerschlacht bei Leipzig gilt als die Entscheidungsschlacht der Befreiungskriege, an derem Ende Napoleon eine entscheidende Niederlage errang und sich aus Deutschland zurückziehen musste.
Das Denkmal wurde im Jahr 1852 vom "Verein zur Feier des 19. Oktober" errichtet. Es trägt die Inschrift: "16. October 1813" und eine Tafel mit der Inschrift: "SCHLACHT BEI WACHAU BEFEHLSSTAND DES KAISER NAPOLEON".

During the Battle of Nations near Leipzig the Galgenberg had a high significance as a shallow natural elevation in the city area of Leipzig. The Emperor Napoleon I. had here based his command post and prepared the battle formation for the 16. October 1813.
The Battle of Nations is the battle of decision of the Wars of Liberation. At the end Napoleon was defeated and had to withdraw from Germany.
The monument was erected in 1852 by the "Association for the celebration of October 19". It has the inscription: "16. October 1813" and a plaque with the inscription: "BATTLE OF WACHAU COMMAND POST OF THE EMPEROR NAPOLEON".
