The Arkansas River was already set when the granite uplift that would form the Rocky Mountains began. About 3 MYA, the mountains rose from the surrounding plains along the Arkansas River, then a small stream. The water wore away the stone over which it flowed. Geologist estimate the mountains surrounding the canyon rose at approximately one foot every 2,500 years. Over the millennia, the stream grew, cutting a deep channel through the granite. The gorge's shape, contrasted to broad canyons such as the Grand Canyon, can be attributed to this long, direct erosion through the dense rock.
