First Baptist Church traces its roots to Mt Zion Baptist Church in Berkeley County in 1835. In 1868, several members of that church began construction of this church. The cornerstone was laid on 24 August 1869. The church opened in 1870 and was dedicated 29 March, 1874. In 1912 significant restorations/additions were completed and the church rededicated.
