"The Congress" is a short story in Jorge Luis Borges' collection entitled "The Book of Sand". In the forward, Borges explains that "The Congress" is hs favorite story and the one that is the most autobiographical. The character that represents Borges is known as Alejandro Ferri. Ferri, an Argentine, becomes involved with a group called "The Congress"...which is a secretive group with worldwide political ambitions. A decision is made that the group should consider use of a single worldwide language. Ferri is sent to London to study the question. He conducts his studies for over a year here, in the library of the British Museum. While there, he falls in love with Beatrice Frost. The pair eventually part ways when Ferri returns to Buenos Aries.
