A monument to commemorate the crew of the Short-Stirling MK I, serial-number BK620. Part of the 75 New Zealand Squadron based on New Market airstrip in England.
In the night of December 17, 1942 the BK620 was on its way to Fallersleben in Germany to bomb the industrial area. On its return to base it was attacked by German fighter planes. Six out of seven members of the crew left the plane by parachute above German - Dutch soil. The pilot tried to reach England but had to crash the plane in the lake nearby the monument ("Westeinderplassen"). The pilot was captured by the Germans; no trace of the other crew members.
