Two small tunnels in an apartment building connect Galilei Street and Kepler Square in the German town Potsdam. The tunnels display murals showing the astronomers Galileo Galilei and Johannes Kepler, respectively.

The tunnel featuring Galileo Galilei shows the astronomer in front of a model of planetary spheres and drawings of moon phases.

On the opposite side is a impression of the inner planets including the asteroid belt and the Galilean Moons.

As much as we admire the artwork, we have to point out that both murals are scientifically somewhat incorrect. Galileo is shown in front of a geocentric model of the solar system, with the earth in the center. His picture in front of that model could of course be interpreted as him being one of the main influences to overcome that model, but we think it was a rather unintentional error and that a heliocentrric model would have been a better message.

The mural showing the planets depicts five moons orbiting Jupiter. So far, 67 moons have been discovered in Jupiter's orbit, but there are only four big ones (not five), the four discovered by Galileo - all the others are rather tiny rocks.

The pictures above are the photographs we took. The artist published pictures of his artwork online. You can see them here, and here.
