The plaque, attached to the plinth on which the gun is displayed, tells us:

Gun 2/89

This howitzer was cast at the
Royal Arsenal. Woolwich in 1858.

Intended for use in sieges,
it could fire explosive shells
high over walls and ramparts.
It was made too late for
use in the Crimean War
(1853-1856) and was probably
never used in conflict.

The barrel is inscribed with the
name of the Superintendent of
the Royal Gun Factory.

Major-General Jonathan Peel,
Secretary of State for War.
