"Monument to Coleman at Petco Park more than a statue
By Bill Center | 6:24 p.m. Sept. 15, 2012
Ted Leitner took one look at the Padres bronze tribute to Jerry Coleman at Petco Park Saturday evening and said: “It’s perfect.”
Coleman’s longtime broadcast partner couldn’t be more right.
The statue itself is 7-foot, 5-inches tall and shows Coleman in the uniform he wore as a pilot in the Korean War. It is located on K Street at the East Village Gate entrance to Petco Park and the Park at the Park.
The statue, however, does not stand alone. Behind it are three four-foot by eight-foot panels detailing the three careers of Coleman’s life – Marine Corps aviator, major league player and his 40-year, Hall of Fame career as a Padres broadcaster.
“I was stunned when I saw the size of it,” said Coleman. “It’s the best thing that ever happened to me. This means more to me . . . ”
During the ceremonies, Coleman said: “Reaching back into the past brings tears to my eyes . . . I have always had two loves, the people I love and who love me and my country.”
The ceremonies opened with the crowd standing in an ovation lasting more than two minutes. It ended with a fly-over of four F-18s from Miramar."
