Keeper of the Gate

The sign says, "After the Gold Rush of 1849, San Fransisco quickly became the most important city on the West Coast, prompting the U.S. Army to build Fort Point to guard the Golden Gate. Originally intended to defend against foreign invasion, the first was rushed to completion to fend off possible Confederate attack during the Civil War. It is the only fort with casemates, or protected enclosures for cannons on the West Coast of the United States."

The Bottom of the Bay

The sign says, "Have you ever wondered what the bottom of San Fransisco Bay looks like under the smooth surface? The model behind you shous that if the water was drained away, you could hike through deep canyon, roll down rippling san dunes, or climb rocky outcrops.

These features result from diverse geologic forces. The creep of Earth's tectonic plates and associated earthquakes created the bay's valley and surrounding hills. A huge river, swollen with Sierra Nevada glacial melt water, cut the deep Golden Gate canyon when glaciers caused seal level to be 300' (100m) lower than it is today. Powerful tidal currents still sculpt fields of sand waves that cover the bay floor."
