Specs for the Dam
December, 1948, was the ground breaking for the project. Newly elected Sen. Lyndon B. Johnson was one of the dignitaries.
Stemming the Leon River was part of an overall program of The Army Corps of Engineers to harness the Brazos River and its tributaries. In addition to flood control, the dam created would provide drinking water for Belton, Temple, Fort Hood and the surrounding area. It is also a source of recreation with over 100 miles of scenic shoreline.
