This is what Paul Malo had to say about this example of "Victorian" in his 1974 publication (for the Landmark Society of Western New York) Landmarks of Rochester and Monroe County: A Guide to Neighboods and Villages:
"Cosmopolitan American taste at the time of the Civil War looked also to Second Empire France. The mansard roof became a familiar feature of the French mode. ALthough there was considerable similarity to the Italianate, especially in emphasizing verticality, richness of ornament (usually rather heavy) was more characteristic of the Second Empire - the quality often associated in this country with the term "Victorian."
