Apogee Stadium Complex, on the west campus of the University of North Texas in Denton was completed in 2011. Apogee was designed by HKS Sports and Entertainment Group and built by Manhattan Construction Company.

It is the first college stadium to be awarded Platinum Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the Green Building Council. The stadium's platinum score is 53/69.

Using a $2 million grant from the State Energy Conservation Office, UNT installed three wind turbines on the grounds to feed the electrical grid that powers the stadium. Apogee is the first collegiate stadium to use onsite renewable wind energy, which reduces energy costs by 25 percent.

Other sustainable design highlights include native Texas landscaping with permeable pavers, which reduce water run-off; carpool parking spaces and pedestrian bridges and walkways encourage less vehicle traffic and pollutions; energy-efficient lighting, ventilation and HVAC; low-flow plumbing to reduce water consumption by 52 percent.

Moreover, 75 percent of the construction waste was recycled. To reduce CO2 emissions, a high percentage of fly ash was substituted for cement. Ninety percent of the occupied spaces use natural light and provide views outdoors. Low volatile organic compound emitting materials such as tapes, sealants, flooring and paints were used to improve indoor air quality.

Apogee's LEED Scorecard:

Sustainable Sites: 11/14
Water Efficiency: 3/5
Energy & Efficiency: 15/17
Material & Resources: 7/13
Indoor Environmental Quality: 12/15
Innovation: 5/5
