This tunnel is over 2,000 yards long. It allows for two way traffic but does not have a towpath. Horses used to be walked over the hill at the top and boats were legged through the tunnel.
Braunston is known as the M25 of the canal system so this is one of the busiest tunnels in the country. It is very rare to be able to go through without meeting another boat, even in the winter.
