The East Dallas Community Garden started on this vacant lot in what was a rough area of town that was transitioning to a neighborhood of Asian immigrants from Cambodia and Laos. The new residents were part of what was at the time a very small ethnic Asian community in Dallas, and there was not enough demand for the traditional vegetables and spices common in their cuisine for any store in Dallas to stock them for purchase.
30 years later, Dallas has not only a large and thriving Asian community from a wide variety of countries, but Dallas has become a truly international city, with many vibrant ansd growing communities from all corners of teh globe.
Also after 30 years, several large supermarkets sell the traditional ethnic vegetables such as bitter melon, long beans, water spinach, pea shoots, and wax gourd that they previously had to grow themselves.

Welcome to our community garden
Every Saturday morning, and many other mornings as well, depending on the season, the gardeners at the East Dallas Community and Market Garden, on Fitzhugh Avenue (between Ross and Bryan), sell produce to the public. The vegetables are grown by the gardeners themselves, and are sold to pay for water, tools, seeds, and other costs. These Cambodian and Lao gardeners favorite crops include: water spinach, bitter melon, wax gourd, long beans, taro stem, ivy leaf gourd vine tips, green onions, and a wide variety of herbs.
This garden was started in 1987, as a project to assist the Southeast Asian refugee community. It continues to thrive today."
