The plaque says, "Far below in the Colorado River you can see Granite Rapid. Like most Grand Canyon rapids, Granite Rapid forms where a side stream flows into the river. At Granite Rapid, Monument Creek enters the Colorado River from the south.

During floods, side stream deposits boulders, rocks and sand into the Colorado River. This debris constricts the channel, forcing the river to gain speed and power. The faster river crashes over debris-strewn riverbed, forming powerful rapids."
