"Built in 1829 as the Royal Oak to serve the navvies building the Macclesfield Canal. The pub is built on the locality known in passed times and marked on old maps as "Fools Nook". This is said to be the favourite meeting place of Samuel 'Maggoty' Johnson, the last professional jester."
