As a member of the Generación del 27, he is considered one of the greatest literary figures of the so-called Silver Age of Spanish Literature, and he won numerous prizes and awards.
After the Spanish Civil War, he went to Argentina into exile, where he remained until 1963. After a few years in Italy, he returned back into democratic Spain in 1977.
Rafael Alberti visited Garchico in January 1991 and on April 28, 1992 he was honoured with this "Rincón de los Poetas" (Poets' Corner) in the Parque de la Puerta de Tierra and the unveiling of his bust, sculpted by the Macedonian artist Tomé Serafimovski (1935 – 2016).
