A historic marker plaque affixed to a boulder outside of the Page Museum at the La Brea Tar Pits tells of the first mention of the Tar Pits in written correspondence by Spaniards who were in possession of California in 1769.
The plaque reads as follows:
"HANCOCK PARK
LA BREA TAR PITS
Presented to
The Citizens of Los Angeles County
in December 1916 by
CAPTAIN ALLAN HANCOCK
With the request that the scientific features be preserved
First historic reference to the tar pools
Recorded in the diary of Gaspar de Portola
On August 3, 1769
Originally a portion of the Rancho La Brea
Granted by Gov. Alvarado 1840
Marked by California Parlor 247
Native Daughters of the Golden West
April 28, 1940"
