General Robert E. Lee is known for his brilliant strategy and audacity in the Seven Days Battle and the Battle of Chancellorsville, and is the only person ever offered the command of two opposing armies. He led the Army of Northern Virginia from June 1, 1862, through many fierce battles including the Battle of Gettysburg eventually surrendering at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865. The Lee monument was unveiled May 29, 1890 at the intersection of Monument Avenue and Allen Street in Richmond. The Statue rises to a height of 60-feet and was designed by French sculptor Jean Antonin Mercié. General Lee sits in profile to the avenue, amidst the center of the largest traffic circle in Richmond.
