The waymarked sign is located at the area near the Old Kitchen where Mission San Gabriel's outdoor fireplaces were built after 1812. The fireplaces are reconstructions built over the foundations of the original fireplace foundations.
The sign reads as follows:
"OPEN FIREPLACES
After the kitchen was destroyed by fire in 1812, open fireplaces were built here. They were designed to hold iron kettles in which beef and corn (popcorn soup) were cooked to feed the Indians. These replicas are similar in size, shape and material, and built directly over the original fireplaces."
