These two signs are placed on adjacent pillars of the pergola that runs along the south side of The Camposanto, and both relate to the cemetery. It seems that the first sign covers the years 1711-1939, and the other sign 1939-present, so we think they should be waymarked together, even though they are two separate signs.
The signs read as follows:
"THE CAMPOSANTO
(Cemetery)
This cemetery was used for burials from 1778 to 1865, and faded archives reveals that C. 6000 Indians were interred here during that period. Many of them were stricken in the devastating cholera and smallpox epidemics of 1825.
The cemetery was first consecrated in 1778, three years after the mission was moved to the site.
In January 29, 1939 the Camposanto was rededicated by His Excellency the Archbishop Cantwell."
The second sign a few feet away reads:
"Since 1939 the cemetery has been used for various Padres and Brethren of San Gabriel Mission. However, seven of the early Franciscan fathers are interred in front of the altar within this old mission chapel. One of them, father Francisco Dumetz, was the last survivor of Serra's old comrades who remained with him in California."
